I guess it's the one from the bible, but I'm not religious, so to me it's just a good, common sense principle to live by. I practice it consistently. Is it too simple--too naive--to be accepted and practiced by everybody? Why do YOU think it doesn't work?

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

It doesn't work because there are human predators and sociopaths.
These people feel no shame in taking all they can from givers like us, then stabbing us in the back as they slip out the door.

Hang in there though, and build good Karma for yourself.....and hope you are around when those people REAP what they have sown!!!!

Well, that really depends on what you mean by work. If by work you mean personal gains, then of course the golden rule doesn't work. The golden is specifically designed to draw your attention away from yourself and towards others. From a religious perspective the benefit of the golden rule would probably be that it brings you closer to god. From a moral perspective, it is an excellent guide for ethical and moral behavior. In fact, there are moral philosophies that are based on such a rule such as the categorical imperative. I believe your problem is that you are expecting some sort of benefit of such a rule to manifest itself to you. Personally, I believe you are benefiting in a number of ways; they are just very subtle and not quite what you are expecting. Choosing to do what is right truly does benefit you just not in all the obvious ways. Part of growing up and becoming a moral entity is recognizing this. It is a shame more people today don't follow such a simple rule or other tenets of morality. The world does seem a selfish place which is why you may suffer in some aspects by following the golden rule. However, ultimately, you will benefit the most and not just in the afterlife (if you choose to believe in such a thing).

Wouldn't it be great if it did work? No war, no racism, no hatred!

People don't all care about the same thing, not even peace. Those who have peace, keep it to themselves and walk in peace all the time. Those who don't are always looking for something to complain about or someone to holler at for thier misfortunes.

So, the best that we can do is to make peace with everyone and keep the process going. If we touch enough people, many more will spread the good news and touch others.

Pass it forward

It does work, if you practice it. Some people don't care about the welfare of others and think only of themselves, so when you are the center of your universe, the golden rule will not work. To some extent, we have all broken the golden rule from time to time.

That IS the golden rule.
The reason it doesn't work is because not everyone follows it. People are too greedy and selfish to follow the rule. But it doesnt mean that they shouldn't, its just that the majority of society really does not care about others.

look at the rule again

its as you would have them do not as they would do.

The rule is for yourself not them. and If you can keep it you are indeed a better person for it.

The next step is harder its to lead by example.

If you can show people how living your way is better.
you might be able to get more of them to follow your rule.

The Golden Rule, treat others the way you want to be treated, does work, but only if you really live it.
