...usually about the time that all their hair has changed to grey... all have their hair cut short and permed curly all over? It's as if it were mandated by law!

I think that you may see that a lot in women whose hair has started to thin. A perm gives the illusion of more volume and more hair. It's very difficult for a woman to lose her hair - that's "supposed" to be a masculine trait, and so women who start to have thinning hair are often ashamed of the fact, and try to hide it. I'm 52, and have really long hair (like waist-length) but I'm thinking about cutting it (though NOT perming it...!), as short hair is a lot easier to deal with.

It has to do with manageability. I think it also has to do with the texture of grey hair. It's dry and usually more wiry. A lot of the time it will just look dead and dried out if it's long, so women will opt for shorter lengths. I have to say though- I'd rather go for a box of color than a the short and curly perm.

Because it's a pain in the tush to keep up a "sexy" hairstyle, and by the time you get to be about 60, you've realized that life is too short to waste time on something so trivial.

Also, it starts thinning out, so the perm "gives it body".

they r get old. They probably want to cut it short so they don't have to bother about worrying about their hair. To maintain it and everything And by the time they r that age they already have husbands so what's the point of trying to impress anybody else??

Alot of women butch off their hair after they have kids and then they start looking older than their husbands. It is so gross. I have heard that it is to "make things easier" Come on, it is not that hard to throw your hair into a pony tail!

Because older women don't want to have to take care of their hair so much. It's such an outdated, ugly hairstyle for anyone. My mom still has reddish brown long hair and she looks beautiful.

LOL I have often wondered the same thing!

I am sure it is because it is much easier to take care of.

Also, it gives them a great excuse to go to the salon.
