ok right!

Everywhere i look on this site people talk about liking boys n stuff and wondering what to do next to find out if the guy likes them back. and i'm finding it a bit weird how the answers that come in are like 'ask him out' and so on...

I'm tryna say this without seeming stupid, but is it really what i know it to mean? In london when you ask someone out your asking them if they wanna be your girl/boyfriend. i mean don't you really really have to get to know the guy first? and how much/well do you get to know someone - rather than just waiting to feel like you know them enough??

Well, in America it is not as much of a commitment to ask someone out as you are saying it is in London. You do not have to really really really like them but instead you may be asking them out so you can get to know them better. You ask the person out when you are feeling some sort of spark or connection that makes you want to spend more time getting to know them.

Omg. The girls and boys in my school say like "Oh I'm going out with him" or "I'm dating her you know." It's so annoying. They dont even know what the meaning is. I say you have to actually have to get to know they guy and "Going out" Means that the guy takes you out. In a car and takes you to dinner at a resturant. They dont have their moms drive you. Or like a movie. Girls now just cant wrap their heads around the fact that hugging between classes doesnt count as a boy/girlfriend.

When I was growing up when you were going out with someone it was going steady. But when us Yanks say to ask the person out it mean to ask them out on a date. You're just leaving out the last 3 words.

Here in the U.S. "asking out" means this......
Lets say I like this guy a lot, If I want I will go up to him and "ask him out" *ask him) if he would like to go out to a movie. Or to dinner one night.
It is to get together with a person that you want to get to know more about and to see if you want to continue dating or not. Depending if you got along well and had things in common.

i know what you mean. that is how we did it too in my home country. but here asking out means asking the person to go out on a date and also to be together as boyfriend/girlfriend. it all depends on the situation.

ASKING OUT is literally that... askling them if they'd like to got out with you, like on a date. It implies nothing more than going to like lunch or dinner or a movie or whatever, becoming bg/gf comes later.

Good question--I thought you had to get to know one another too--but times change and people change. Glad I've already been there and now am happily married to the man of my dreams.

in america, asking someone out is like courting. it's a way of hanging out to get to know them better.
