Because of all the terrible stuff someone has been through they call it hell but then they come back. At that point they can't call it heaven because heaven is supposed to be a happy place and there isn't anything happy with hell so there you go.

It is saying you have been through hell...a hell of a rough time and you made it back (through it).
Who would want to go to heaven and back? When I go I'm staying :)

I suppose because those who go to Heaven would want to stay. The early church believes maybe Jesus went to Hell and took it captive. But He came back. no one else can.

Well hell is supposed to be the worst place one can go, so when a person has something rotten happen to them the only way to describe it is going "to hell" "and back" they are on the mend.

well a. to go to heaven and come back would be bad, wouldn't you want to stay in heaven? b) my quess is it stems from Dante's inferno - which deals with a person going to hell, seeing the horrors and being able to return - just a quess though

The pain and suffering some people go through. It seems like going to hell and back. "Like been there done that."

Your probably would want to stay in heaven but not stay in hell, so 'to hell and back' is handier than 'to heaven and stay.'
