What exactly is the real pit bull problem? Is it irresponsible ownership causing these dogs to become problems? Is it people training them for exactly what they were bred to do, even after it becomes illegal? Is it people saying that animal aggression is the same as people aggression, even though it's not? Is it people chaining their dogs outside next to a too-small dog house and throwing them maybe one bowl of food a week? Is it people doing horrible things, such as raping a pit bull puppy? What is the pit bull problem to you?

Bozema - there's a $5,000 reward to find the person who raped a pit bull puppy, I think in the New York area. You can google it. I found it yesterday and was completely enraged. It kind of makes me wish I lived in New York so I could torture this guy, honestly. This dog is so terrorized she can't even stand up, and she has internal bleeding.

It's the poor training that most of them receive. A pit bull should be very averse to human aggression, although it may always be a little off around other animals.

What I think most people don't take into account is, the pit bulls are first an animal, then a dog. They want food and shelter, then they want their doggie job to do, whether that's hunting, herding, or defense of their den. Then the breed comes in to play. But they can be trained not to fight, just as easily as they can to fight in the pits.

All the problems you mention contribute, but the main thing I wish people would do is take each dog individually. Instead of breed bans, have violent dog tracking, so that specific problem individuals can be taken out of public life.

I am a firm believer that there are no bad dogs only bad people/owners. Pit Bulls are NOT the problem and there are so many other breeds that are naturally aggressive. Pits are not only if bred from a certain aggressive line, are trained or abused and neglected. The breed has been unfairly judged and people are way to willing to listen to the biased news media. They always need a story and they alwys need to make it worse. If you got rid of all the Pit the sick idiots would find another breed to exploit. The problem I believe is without a doubt the people and NOT the dogs. I have one that is the sweetest baby alive and is actually older than my Lab but the Lab bullies him. But truthly they are the best of friends and the Pit would never hurt him, or anyhthing else.

The issue I have with pit bulls is pit bull owners. Training a dog to be aggessive and attack and then allowing that dog to escape and attack someone. Quite frankly I think the owner should go to prison for that.

I will never forget the 60 minutes story. The guy was on talking about how great pit bulls were. Then a month later the pit bull chewed off his daughters face. Wonder how he felt then.

So I would say the real pit bull problem is people. I don't know if these dogs are aggressive without being trained to be that way.

I believe the biggest Pit Bull problem is the media. You must know, there are many dog bites that occur on any given day. The media reports 'ONLY' the Pit bites. When was the last time you heard another bite reported on? People believe what they hear or read , but no news source tells them Pits are responsible for only a very small% of bites despite the large number of Pit Bulls in our society. I have had Pits for over 20 years with no issues.I am really offended when people talk $hit about my dogs and don't even know them. I consider it plain bigotry.

There are so many bad dog owners out there today. Many refuse to walk their pets opting to leave their gates open at night so their dog/s stroll the streets at night instead.

Dogs such as the Pit Bull are a dangerous dog on the basis that they are chosen to fight and attack. In reality, it is the owner that should be severely punished for training a dog to act in such a way.

Toy dogs such as those rat dogs(etc) are more likely to bite yet are ignored due to the minimal injury inflicted.

Any dog can be good. Any dog can be bad. The problem is when a pit bull is bad it can cause serious injury or death. They are very powerful dogs and IF they attack the results are far more severe than the attack of other breeds. It's their ability to injure that makes them dangerous. They are excellent dogs, if treated properly. As long as bad people are making bad dogs pit bulls will be a problem.

yes. to all of it.
the problem with not only pit bulls but every breed...mainly the more "aggressive" breeds, IS the owner. if the owner is neglectful, aggressive....well lets put it in these terms:
if you are a parent, and your child sees nothing but hate and violence in the home or it is directed toward them, your child becomes a vicious monster.
if you lock your child in a room and only feed him/her when you remember you have a kid....they ARE going to go crazy and once again become a vicious monster.
you can't assume that a dog is going to be any different. children and dogs...be it puppies or anything of the sort. it WON'T END WELL with any of that.
if you show them love and kinds. regular care. praise. all the things you would want your child to be brought up in. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE IN THE WAY YOUR DOG SHOULD BE TREATED IN YOUR HOME.
and i say. if you can't afford to show your dog that affection. get a gold fish!

Pits are victims of their own bad reputation. They attract dopers, white trash, and irresponsible pet owners in general, people who don't need to own ANY dog, let alone one with the capacity to do the sort of damage a Pit can. Then, they breed for the aggression, rather than a good nature like every other breed is bred for. Not a good mix. They let 'em run wild at night, and then just chain them and ignore them during the day. They don't care that they have a dog, only that they have a Pit. Banning them only makes them that much more attractive to losers who need a tough dog to make up for what's lacking in their pants. I feel sorry for the breed as a whole, because the fools who exploit it will ultimately cause it's demise.

Caused by bad owners. BTW, pit bulls don't even rate near the top in dog aggression according to the society that tests dog temperment. Chows and labs are much more likely to bite their owner or a stranger.

Its a combination of both. They were bred by evil people for evil purposes. Pits can be surprisingly friendly one minute and tearing off your arm the next. This reminds me of some people who are so charming and silver tongued then beating you silly the next.
The other problem is the people that are attracted to these dogs are rather unsavory characters themselves. Indeed, pits are the dog of choice for criminals and tweakers and of course dog fighters.
