Does anyone know the consequences for buying a last minute plane ticket(last minute as in the day of flight)?

The primary consequence is that you will pay more for the ticket. The secondary consequence is that you may be subject to some secondary screening - especially if you do something like buy a one way flight at the last minute with cash - however this shouldn't add more than a few minutes to your time passing through security. In fact, sometimes their "extra screening" line will get you through faster!

Of course, if you are flying internationally there may be additional visa related complications.

There are no real consequences. Last minute or walk up fares is where airlines make their money. You will pay a full fare most likely, but you will be subject to a full search at security, so make sure you arrive in ample time. Cut off at most major airports is now 45 minutes before departure. That means you must be checked in by then. Some airports, like Las Vegas, you still cant even get through security and to the gate in that amount of time and make the flight, so make sure you arrive early.

The biggest thing that you will do is pay more for your plane ticket. I would just not pay in cash that would cause flags to be raised. I have outside support that have to get flights for the same day and nothing bad has happened.

Well, it depends what airline you are flying, as all of them have different policies. You are going to pay more for the ticket, and you might not be able to pick your seat out do to availability. Check with the airline you desire to fly on and view their "Fare Rules" for the ticket. Also, read their "At the Airport" section of the webpage or "Before You Fly". Good Luck!

No consequence at all except you pay the premium price for your ticket. Be sure when you buy it that you get a firm seat assignment and NOT standby

It'll be stressful and rushed for you, and it might be a lot more expensive... you might not even be able to buy a ticket. Depends on how booked they are. You should be able to still do it, they usually aren't ever full, but then again sometimes they overbook.
