You are at grave risk of identity theft. Start monitoring your credit report immediately.

First, report it to the Social Security Administration. It is possible to get a new number issued, but it is a royal pain in the ***.

Next contact all three credit bureaus and inform them your Social Security Number has been stolen.

Trans Union
Equifax
Experian

Next, contact all credit card holders and inform them that your SSN has been compromised. Do the same at your HR department at work.

Hopefully that will be enough.

Contact Social Security immediately to report it.

Contact the three credit reporting agencies to put your number on a watch list. Check your credit report a few times this year.

You are at a very high risk of identity theft.. get yourself ID theft monitoring service on Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion, or get all 3 and *place a fraud alert on all 3*. You could be liable for whatever amount of loans or crimes the ID thief commits. Such as stealing a car, or using your SSN and birth date when getting caught using drugs, DUI charges, prostitution, or worse.

I use the ID Theft shield from Pre-paid Legal, with the legal consultation and legal shield coverage for emergencies. This will monitor credit activity, and if you report to them, they can check for any crimes committed in your name on police records. They will also help you clear up the problems.

I understand you should file a police report because it allows you to file in your credit report to block things the thief does with your numbers. However, you need to keep checking your credit report, and you might have trouble with your taxes, if you are assumed to have made what others besides you earned. Keep copies of the police report so you can send it to people as problems pop up.

I would go to your nearest Social Security Office and advise them of this.

You need to go to your local SSA office and notify them of what happened. Then you should also get a copy of your credit report to see if there are any suspicious activities, loans, etc done in your name.

I would call a lawyer ASAP. If someone steals your identity... it can cost you thousands to fix what damage can be done.
