Primarily it is economic. Militia's kill and drive away civilians and engage in genocide and "religious" perecution in order to protect their financial interests in the lucrative mines (gold, diamonds and emeralds) operated there.

Neither. It's Arab Muslim militants, supported by the Muslim Sudanese government, performing atrocities and genocide on the native black African Muslims. It is racially motivated. Darfur is the western area of Sudan. There is still war and atrocities going on in the Christian southern areas as well. That Jihad has been going on since the mid-1980's by the same Arab group, motivated by religious beliefs.
