Unless you are prepared to watch tv in a dark room with no windows get and LCD. There is no burn in risk as there is wtih Plasma.

You can watch LCD in bright light and get this. Lcd screens can last 20 years. Max on a plasma is 5 if you don't get burn in and if you have painted all of your windows black.

Just avoid rear projection as they are an inferior imatation of LCD.

look for a contrast ratio of 4000-1. Anytthing less and you will lack colours and therefore lack true hd.

And avoid those monster cables. They are a waste of money. I use a s-video for $5 and it works just as well.

Have fun!

She is absolutely correct in her answer. Don't forget DLP technology. I'm not very fond of it because the bulb lasts only about 1/3 as long as the LCD bulb and plasma recharge. The only thing that I would like to add is that you should only use an HDMI cable. It is one cable for video and sound and features an uncompressed, pure digital signal. S-video, component and RCA cables are analog.

So, go LCD with an HDMI cable from your high-def cable/satellite box. Many tv's now feature a 6000:1 contrast ratio. That is the best you can do for now. 1080i and 1080p aren't that much different in quality (no channel broadcasts in 1080p anyway). However, if you want to be prepared for when they do.... buy 1080p.

In summary:

1. LCD
2. 6000:1 contrast ratio
3. 1080p (or 1080i)
4. HDMI (upgrade your cable/satellite service)
5. Panasonic is an excellent brand! I love Samsung, as well.

I beilieve that LCD's are better, they cost less and they have a better picture. Panasonic is a good brand, you might also try LG, Sony (expensive though), or any other name brand. Just remember that if you decide to get one from a smaller brand and you use satellite or cable that it has the code so you can use the remote that came with the box.
