Yes you can. The owner of a cheese store in the Amish country told us to wrap the package in newspaper to help preserve the quality. Also put it in a part of the freezer that will maintain an even temp, don't put it on the door or right in front.

Hard or semi-hard cheese can be frozen if cut in 1/2 to 1-pound blocks. Wrap in plastic wrap and then put in freezer bags. After freezing, cheese may become crumbly and mealy, but, it will retain its flavor. It works best for cooking.
Plan to use frozen cheese within 4 to 6 months. Thaw cheese in the refrigerator. Use soon after thawing.
The cheeses that freeze best are brick, Camembert, cheddar, Edam, mozzerella, muenster, Parmesan, provolone, Romano and Swiss. Blue cheeses are more prone to becoming crumbly but they'll still taste good. Cream cheese and cottage cheese do not freeze well.

Yes, I put it in the freezer in the bag it comes in- just don't open it. If it's an opened bag, I also put it in a freezer type ziploc bag. Just date the bag so you know when you put it in the freezer. (I'm talking about shredded cheese- a block of cheese won't freeze well. Shred it first!)

Yes, you can still eat it without any harm coming to you. I would eat it within a few days, though, just because freezing it and then defrosting it will break down the water contained in it some.

Yes, but it will be crumbly when thawed--not good for slicing, but ok if melting on pizza or casseroles.
