Trevor and Lilly have really good answers, I think. If it were me, and I weren't a recovering alcoholic, I'd be drinking vodka, for sure.
There are pain meds for toothache in the drugstore, I'd try that and any other pain tablets (you've gotten several recommendations). I've heard the clove bit works too. Toothaches are sometimes just sensitivity, perhaps a tiny fracture, that will go away (and probably come back sometime later). Sometimes the dentist will recommend waiting until a filling really breaks, if the problem seems insignificant on the X-ray.
I used to be TERRIFIED of dentists, and if you're one of those people, rest assured that procedures are basically pain-free these days. I've had crowns, root canals. No problem. And I'm a big baby. Many dentists can give you gas to relax you totally, some even use a med (pill). Novocaine shots are usually totally painless. So if fear is keeping you away, don't be ashamed. Look in the phone book for a dentist that specializes in nervous patients...they often state this. If it's a financial issue, my dentist lets me pay in increments, if necessary. No big problem. If you get in with a dentist as a regular, he'll even meet you when you have an emergency, like on a weekend or early in the morning. This is the real deal, take it from a scaredy-cat.

Toothache is your body's way of saying there's a problem and go to the dentist, toothache rarely cures itself.
Toothache tincture or clove oil applied directly to the affected area will relieve the pain as will chewing cloves or yarrow leaves.
Small amounts of alcohol (the stronger the better - whiskey, brandy etc) applied directly to the affected area will also help relieve the pain.
Ice cubes or very cold water will numb the affected area but the effect is short lived, if you have sensitive teeth at the best of times avoid this method.
Painkillers such as paracetamol can be taken, you can chew half a tablet and 'work' it into the affected area for quicker pain relief. Don't take pain killers with alcohol.
Applying pressure to the affected area can also help.
Chipped teeth usually aren't painful, wisdom teeth can be and if it's a child then ignore the alcohol method above and use junior paracetamol.
Abscesses are usually the most painful and this is an infection which needs treating with anti-biotics. Until you get it looked at by a doctor or dentist and get a prescription there's little you can do to fight the infection. If it is an abscess then don't wait until you get a dental appointment before getting anti-biotics.

I am going through both feelings. Use Ora-gel and Advil. It works for me. Until I the pain goes away or I see the dentist.
Good luck. Oh and for other toothaches use Clavo (and herb) smash it add alittle rubbing alcohol and use a cotton swab and place it in where it hurts.

OK there's two main factors here. Yes one of them is proper hydration. The other is a vitamin deficiency. Potassium (K) is the vitamin in your system that prevents cramping and spasms. Try eating a banana every day for a couple of weeks. It takes a little time for the K to build up in your system so don't be discouraged if it don't happen for you right away. Just stick with it and it'll work.

I assume you have already called the dentist?
Get some whole cloves from the spice rack, and chew on them, and tuck them in your check next to your painful teeth.
Also go to the drug store and get some stuff to numb it.
it's made from cloves.
I go for the herbs myself. chew a whole clove and get it soft and tuck it in between the check and the gum.
CALL THE DENTIST!! ASAP
