Just wondering if it's a good idea to write down and post some rules, like in a classroom, rather than just have them be implied.

As a Single Parent .. and a Long Term One .. YES, I DID post some general rules for in the home in the entry hall ... mainly because I had TWO children and we ALL know that children 'FORGET' the things that they KNEW just the moment before!

I would say that this might be extremely useful for very young children. As they can't remember all of the rules all of the time (as long as they can read - if not, use pictures). Its a good way of home socialisation and teaches the children that there are boundaries in life. Its also useful to get the young children to help in drafting the rules, that way they mean more to the children.

I can't really see 'home rules' working with adolescents on the other hand.

We do have 'home rules' for our family. But now my daughter is 10, they don't need to be written down just reiterated often when broken.

Ours are implied but we have had a list of chores posted. We only resorted to this because no one seemed to remember what was expected of them.

I suppose that if the house rules were not being respected. Listing then could be a friendly reminder.

I don't have to post any rules in my house. I'm the boss and will not hesitate to remind people of my rules if they break them. After that, they have no problem remembering them.

i don't do this because my kid can't read. that might be a good idea if your kids can read but as they get older u may have to add or subtract a few rules.
