Actually I've always heard that crossing your ankles was the proper way for a lady to sit. I did some quick research for you and here's a good article:

When you wear a skirt or dress, you will look more modest if you cross your legs. If you are wearing pants, I don't think it makes a difference.
Your mother is probably remembering how it was when she was young.
If that makes your mother happy, you should try to remember to cross your legs --it is such a small thing to do.
