If you really truly want a full-bred cat with papers, then the best thing to do is read a little about the different breeds.
Some breed are very active, and some are very sedentary. Some are social and some like quiet- you need to pick a trait that matches your lifestyle.
Siamese are very talkative- but that can drive you crazy.
Maine coons will pick one person and pretend no one else exists.
I found a cat book and it was very informative.
Why go to a breeder? Wouldn't you consider adopting a full breed cat from a shelter? If an owner passes away or has a new baby, kitty goes to the pound. One of my friends has a Russian Blue she found at the pound and adopted. I adopted a kitten and then discovered she is a purebred- and she is the smartest cat I ever had. I have two Maine Coons from the pound. I also have a regular domestic longhair that was abandoned, and became our most loyal buddy. He actually woke me and tried to lead me to safety when someone broke in.
Granted, the shelters spay and neuter so you can't breed these cats, but you can have a purebred for just the fee.
I hope you find a kitty that is a good match for you and your family!

I love my Bengal (purebred, but I actually rescued him from a shelter).
My advice is to research the different breeds. I had no idea what I was getting into with my baby. His personality has done an almost 180 since I adopted him (previous abuse). He was not the docile cat I thought I was getting based on my interaction with him at the shelter. Research the level of care, medical problems, temperments, etc. that are related to each breed, then pick one that's best suited to your lifestyle and personality.
As for adopting cats from shelters, I've adopted two. One your general DSH and the purebred. The DSH died a year after I got him from a blood disorder. My Bengal has flourished--AND I'm in touch with his breeder. She's been a fountain of knowledge and support, both with my Bengal and the DSH as I tried to help him get well. That's help I never would have gotten from shelter staff.

Do you mean to ask "What kind of cat should I get to breed?" or "What kind of cat should I get from a breeder?"
Either way, my answer is none. There are already so many kitties who need homes. And, really, as with dogs, mutts are the best. Pedegree cats and dogs are frequently inbred, leading to health and behavior issues.
But, if you must have a pedegree, maine coons are great. They're big, fluffy, and affectionate. I've had two; they are gorgeous, intelligent, and very friendly.
Don't forget to spay or neuter your pet!

Please consider adopting a cat or kitten from your local shelter. Many people are attracted to purebreds because they want a cat with a particular color, size, or hair length. For example, you might be interested in Russian Blues because you like the blue-gray color, or you might be interested in Maine Coons because you want a big shaggy cat. But it's not necessary to buy a purebred to get these physical characteristics. You can find blue-gray cats, or big shaggy cats, or cats of any other size and description, at your local animal shelter.

A ragdoll in my opinion, they are naughty and cute and they follow you everywhere they are real people cats and they flop to floor all the time (hence where they got there name). I have a cross and when she dies i will never get another like her she is fabulous and i have seen ALOT of cats.
They like water but are lazy as well, but have times of craziness even at 9 years old!!
She is really great with kids and loves everyone, even people who say they hate cats love my Forrest.
