My dog is an older dog (12 years old) he's on medication for the cough he has and a few other medications too. The thing is, he seems worse lately. He coughs almost everytime he moves. The only time he does ok is when he's laying on his side. Once he gets comfotable, he doesn't have any problems. Also, when he's drinking water, he doesn't choke on that or anything. So I don't really see why it's getting worse, other than just because he is an older dog.
He has a vet appointment Monday, but I'm wondering what I can do to help him over the weekened? Someone told me use an air humidifier and see if that helps. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

Hi there i like Northern G approach to you question she should get the best answer, it certainly does sound like CHF (congestive heart failure), There are some other options as well it could be such as advance Heartworm something caught in the dogs throat etc etc, Meds usually help a bad heart after diagnoses depending of the severity. I would imaging the vet using Frusemide for the cough because of the fluid and depending on the finding a heart medication to help your dogs heart. Keep your dog rested over the weekend if you cannot get to a vet sooner than Monday (which would be my suggestion), Do not use a humidifier you do not to aggravate the symptoms.
Please if yo cannot find a vet open on the weekend be home to monitor your dog.

Hopefully, your Vet can solve the problem. If not, ask if the dog should be put down to end suffering. It's one of the hardest things you'll ever do. I know as I've had to do it 3 times.
This may help some...
The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

It might help if we knew what kind of meds he's on. It sounds to me like he might be in some sort of heart failure. His signs (and age, unfortunately) all point to a malfunctioning heart that is backing fluid up into his lungs and making him cough. Keep your Mon. appt. with the vet and ask for some chest x-rays (if they haven't already been done). Heart failure is a serious problem, and the right medication can slow the progression and give your dog a longer, happier life.
If he's coughing because of heart troubles, I don't think a humidifier will help.
Good luck with your dog... it's hard to see them get old.

The cough is from what? Congested heart failure?Ask the vet for complete details. If he is miserable, don't make him suffer on and on.A friend of mine watched her 13 year old suffer for 2 months before she called the vet. When the vet put her down, she told her that the dog had cancer, diabeties, and congested heart failure. She also ask her why did she wait.Ask on your appointment Monday, get ready for the end result.Hope this helps.

It would help to know what the medication he is on is... and what was the diagnosis for the cough when the medication was perscribed. It sounds to me like it could be a heart problem.
