It depends.
The TKTS booths are great, but they're not super to stand in line in July with kids.
Try eBay- I get tickets ALL the time for more than 50% off. I just got Rockette's tickets for Xmas eve for 30 bucks each, and I've gotten Producer's tickets for 50 each.
Generally, there's not really a price difference between Broadway and Off Broadway; and all the shows that are good for the kids are on Broadway. The further off Broadway you get, like off off Broadway, the weirder and more abstract the shows (like Puppetry of the penis- hardly appropriate for children).

RE:
Whats the average price for Broadway tickets in New York City? Is Off Broadway as good and how much ?
We are taking the kids to NYC in July. Friend told us you could get tickets at ticket booths on the street the same day as the show. Is this right? Any recommendations on show?

Any recommendations on show? -- You can't go wrong with a Disney performance on Broadway. The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast are great because there are a lot of colors and animals. They already understand the story line and the set design and special effects are incredible enough for the adults to enjoy as well. In Mamma Mia (the music of ABBA) is really fun and the kids might like the light and airy atmosphere of the show. The Music Man is also a great idea. It's a classic and kids tend to like the music as well. Other shows include: Mary Poppins, Les Mis, Spelling Bee (10+ over) and Grease. There are plenty of other shows but those are appropriate for kids. If you see any musical (that isn't child appropriate, see Wicked)
Getting tickets the same day as the show -- You can very well do this. If it's a busy day, the chances are lowered and the prices might be a little higher because of the demand. I think what they are referring to is the early morning sale for most shows. If you get up early and go to the theater around 6am the tickets go on sale but that's really only for students. If you are looking to be prepared with tickets, buying them ahead of time is a good idea. Don't be discouraged by Off-Broadway either. The only downside is that the advertisments aren't MAIN STREAM so you don't usually hear about it. Go to: http://theater.nytimes.com/pages/theater/offbroadway/index.html for a list of Off-Broadway shows. They give you descriptions and so on. Some shows are more expensive than others because of the demand and how recently they opened on Broadway.
Best availability for tickets are on Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Hi. I hope you enjoy NYC when you visit. Tickets range from about $75 - $180 per seat depending on seats and show. Off Broadway can be just as good but for your first time and for the kids I recommend On-Broadway. The tickets booth is only open on Wednesdays and Saturdays for both same day matinee' (2:00pm ) and evening shows (8:00pm). The tickets are more reasonable but you may sit apart or not find the show you want. A matinee' usually is great for the kids and easier to obtain. You MUST get there early to stand in line if you are going to try this option. People line up at least two hours before. Bring games to play with the kids unless one of you can stay on line while the other can enjoy one of the restaurants or game places in the area. You can try to obtain 2 for 1 tickets through specials. I will get back to you with more information on where. Great shows for all are Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan, Lion King, Wicked. Hope this helps! Best wishes for a great time!

You can get discounts for Broadway shows, but even with a discount, most shows' prices are ridiculous. Check out the New Victory Theatre; it's a beautiful venue and they put on shows for children - really good shows. I saw "The Happy Prince" there a few months ago. It was one of the best shows I saw last year. The little children were given paper crowns and paper capes to wear and they got these little elevated seats so that they could see everything the adults could see. And, they were so well-behaved. Check out their schedule and, if you can make time, take the kids to a show at the New Victory.
Are they very young? Any of them interested in dolls? If so, you have to go to American Girl Place. Little girls take their dolls with them and they are treated like princesses. What an experience for a child. They have shows, serve meals (with special little seats for the dolls). They cut and restyle dolls' hair, sell outfits. It's always mobbed.

You should book tickets in advance. They are expensive- I recently paid $50 for Annie off-Broadway- cheapest seat. Broadway is more expensive. Actually, though, I think off-Broadway has more edgy, interesting work sometimes. Broadway right now is very BROAD and commercial.

I went alone on a cold rainy night. I got in for 100.00 to see the producers. Be real nice to the door guy. Everyone told me they couldn't believe I did it.
