It's a distraction. A lot of people who have insomnia have trouble falling asleep because they can't stop thinking or obsessing about things in their heads. They can't stop thinking about things they need to do, or things they did wrong, or things that are happening in the next week, or things that happened today, etc. etc. By focusing on counting sheep (or anything else sort of mindless -- you can focus on your breathing as well, counting your breaths), it distracts you and helps you relax and let go of those worries that were keeping you from sleep. It doesn't always work, and it doesn't work for all people -- but it's essentially a form of meditation devised to help you relax and get sleepy.

In theory it distracts your mind so you dont focus on the everyday stresses that keep most of us up late at night. A lot of time if I'm in bed right before I fall asleep I start thinking about a million things like how many eggs i have, did I change the air filter, did i balance my check book? A method i read about somewhere I try using thats more effective is couting your breaths... inhaling and exhaling while counting, breath in for 3 breath out.. it helps relax and distract.. Good luck counting sheep though- it helps some people :)

I have regularly used soothing tune whilst insomnia moves. I love smooth classical, instrumental tune. I extensively utilized tune to aid my kids sleep from delivery. I lately got here throughout a process known as Deep Sleep one hundred and one. It's used at Four Seasons Hotels. I do not promote the product nor do I make some thing for recommending it. I endorse the usage of calming tune at the side of hot milk. The different hyperlink that I endorse is Top 10 Foods for a Good Night's Sleep

Its been proven not to, but it was believed to be relaxing. Now sleep studies show that it would be better to imagine a vast meadow and to see yourself sleeping, or doing something relaxing. Sheep jumping actually just keeps the brain awake, we just fall asleep eventually cause we're tired.

Insomnia really can't be cured doing this though, if your having trouble sleeping i highly recommend seeing a sleep doctor, as it can cause other things, such as depression and sickness.

Sorry my answer was so long, but i hope i helped :)

Why wouldn't someone love counting them? ;)

They're cute, fluffy, puffy, addorable and they go "baa" :) It's peaceful to see a puff of fluff running around... as long as it's not running towards you to bite you on the nose... Um... They're soft and depending where you are you can actually approach them. However, in this case... when trying to fall asleep... do not go out into the farm-field to count them... Try to imagine them, instead. They look like white little clouds moving across the blue or night sky.

I think, it's soothing because for one reason or the other... they are peaceful to look at :)

Doing so just keeps your mind off your troubles and the stressors in your life.

You can also drink chamomile tea, light lavender candles or incense, meditate, read, put on some easy-listening music, etc. to help you relax and sleep.

it would be a form of meditation so instead of all the thoughts running through your head you concentrate on a repetitive scene like the sheep or any short themed image to lull your mind to a rest state

because it's a task that requires very little thought and is so boring, people fall asleep.
