No, it's an epiphany that half your life is over and the stupid choices you made created the problem. But, rather than admitting it and trying to make your future better, they make the problem worse by running away from their responsibilities.

It's all rather pathetic to me.

It can be. People start feeling that they have not accomplished what they set out to, and that can be depressing. It can be their position at work, their salary, their home/car = not being the ones they dreamt they'd have by this stage of life.

In the home it can be that the kids are not acting respectably, the spouse has become older/less attractive, etc.

These things can depress you, but you can get help. A therapist, or MD can start you on the road to recovery. Self-help books can as well. Working out and eating healthily can pick up your spirits.

Get yourself thinking about getting some help--this is too big to handle on your own. You will harm your physical and mental health, and perhaps do the same to friends and loved-ones.

If it actually feels to you like depression, then it would be legtimate for you to view it as that, I think.

But if you feel that people get depressed simply for.....medical or hormonal reasons, rather than in response to authentic personal concerns about life, then while you may indeed be depressed, simply going and getting a pill for how you feel is not likely to provide the long term peace you are looking for.

You may indeed have to search out something that puts new and lasting meaning in your life, in order for your feelings of unease to really leave.

No, it isn't a form of depression, however, it is one of the characteristic of the mid-life crisis. This is one of the reasons why it is nec. to seek professional help, medical and therapy.
