Yes, it's written in the over 40s constitution that you must be staid at all times - Your country expects.

Perhaps you should also take up tatting, have a blue hair rinse and a marcel wave, or get a little yapping poodle to carry around in your arms?
There are no rules that I know of for over 40 year olds.
Wear whatever makes you comfortable and happy.
The only transgression is being mutton dressed as lamb.
Wear nothing too tight or too short. If you wear a short skirt, do not also have a plunging neckline.
Other than that....enjoy yourself and be happy..

If you are of the orithdox Jewish faith, at 40 you shave your head and wear a wig. If you listen to bl**dy hairdressers, as soon as the clock strikes for your 40 bday, you cut your hair into a short mascline style. Never ever wear you hair long, or down, wear sleeveless dresses or vests, or show your knees. You are 40 and therefore OLD! lol
Ignore all above. I do and I'm way over 40 and still having fun.

No way.Wear what you are comfy in and what suits your figure and colouring. What is wrong with you that you feel you have to suddenly conform to a stereotypical image of a middle aged woman. You are ONLY 40 not 90.I am 47 and i still dress trendy and smart whilst still looking elegant and classy.A pashmina(shawl)could be worn if you really want to but I would chose one that is ethnic over one that is knitted or fuddy duddy.Be individual..you won't regret it.

Did you know 60 is meant to be the new 40?
So unless your upper arms are seriously flapping about hitting people in the eye, go shawl-less or topless!

Ha! Ha! That's hilarious! I'm 50, and I think I'll hold on for another 30 years or so before I wear the shawl. You're just a kid.

If you're cold....Are you serious? I'm 35 and have no intention of doing anything I would not normally do just because I turn a certain age. That sounds like a Victorian era tradition. Do you also keep your ankles covered? Age has nothing to do with it.

How much do you weigh? depending on that and your age, we might have to send you to a special island LOL (just kidding) You are only as old as you feel, some days I feel 100. I am 45, but *Thank God* I do not have any gray hair, but I do not try to look like a teenager either, that looks desperate. If you wear a shawl, make sure it is pashmina.
