That all depends on how much you can afford to pay yourself. After all you're talking about SELF-employment.
There are lots of other questions too.
- How good are you at your chosen medium?
- What's the market for your talent?
- How good are you at self-promotion or marketing your works?
- Do you know how to write a business plan and manage cash flow?
Being a successful self employed artist means knowing a few things about business.
I suggest you check out your local community college and find out what entrepreneurship related classes are available.
If you're lucky enough to live in the northwest region of the US check out the BizArts Conference happening in Everett, WA from January 26 & 27, 2007.
Business trainings like these teach artists how to keep from becoming ‘starving artists’.

You can also check out resources from Self-Employment in the Arts

There are also conferences in Lisle IL and Tampa, FL.
Ohh yeah and you might want to find out how to use the spell check function.
Good Luck!

Anybody who is self employed can only draw a salary based on how much of their services they can sell and how much they can sell them for. Most artists do not make a good living and the ones who do spend years of creating and perfecting their art before they really start selling. Many artists are not recognized until after they die.
If I were you I would plan on living in the poor house if art is your only source of income.

You don't make a regular salary, you just make money out of your buisness. Buisness being, how many paintings you sell, how much people pay you to do a piece for them, and etc. Artists like Picasso or Van Gogh weren't millionaries when they started but their paintings rose to millions after their deaths. If your really talented and know the right places to display your work, you should be somewhat well off. But being an artist as a job is tough and you need to true heart and love for it, to be happy.

It's almost impossible to be a self employed makeup artist. You would need to build a clientele, and make appointments, and who's going to go to someone they've never heard of who works out of their own place? Have you been licensed? You need to be, and then go work at a spa.

Salary is a term that applies to when someone else employs you. If you are self-employed, your income is whatever you earn from selling your art less whatever costs you incur. But it's not a salary.

With no offense meant SALARY is totally incorrect in the abstract.
I've been one for nearly 50 years and unless one is at the top of the game, I suggest one learn to enjoy Peanut butter as a food source.
To be an artist one should never equate it to wealth in $$$ but the bounty of the Passion for creating.

hard to answer. i guess it could be anything from " starving artist" to very wealthy.
the key ...if one of your main motives is to make money...is to recognise your market. in reaching that market though...sometimes you may find yourself having to compromise your true art.you will have to decide if its more important to pay the bills...or stay absolutely true to yourself. some can do both...but its a narrow path.
you will also have to realise that promoting your art is key. often you have to sell yourself...or convince somone else to sell you. so...suddenly you find yourself a salesperson! its alot of work for most of us, but i would never go back to punching a clock.
all the best.
