It's like a "j" or a soft "g" in English.

The J is pronounced like Americans pronounce the J.
Jambo (kiswahili) or
Jumbo (swahili)
means "hello" and is pronounced with the hard J.

"Jambo! Habari gana? Mimi ni mzuri sana."
"Hi! How are you? I'm fine!"

I lived in Kenya when I was a child and had to learn some Swahili for my local primary (elementary) school.

The "j" is pronounced somewhere between a "dy" and a "j" For example:

"Jambo" is said "dyambo"!
