We have a 10 month old labradoodle and he has no problem with going into his crate, but he starts whining/crying about 5:00 am. We usually put him in his crate around 11:00 pm. We tried leaving him out one night and he put a hole in the couch. He is fine being in his crate during the day, but seems to wake up so early. Any help?

Yes! Take him outside at 5am. He probably needs to go to the bathroom!

Make sure he is getting lots of exercise during the day so that he is tired at night. If you are getting up and letting him out while he is still whinning he has realized this works and will always do that. Never let him out untill he settles down and stops making any noise. Also to get to a more normal time in the morning, make sure you take him for a long walk just before bed, no food or water either as this will just make him want to go really early. Some water is fine! Then next time you hear him at 5am, let him whine till 5:15, then wait till he stops and let him out...keep doing this every morning in increments of 15mins...before long he'll know that bedtime is 11pm and wake up time is whatever you set it to. I have a 4 mo old Husky and he has his last treat/food at 8pm, a small drink before his last pee of the night (around 9:30pm) and bedtime is at 10:30pm...he sleeps till 6am in the morning on weekdays and sleeps till 8:30-9:30 on weekends. He knows his routine and if he ever starts to howl off those hours he knows that no one is coming for him....be patient and strong. I know how hard it is to hear the whine and not go running, but you must stop this or he'll run the clocks for you and your family forever!

Get your lazy *** out of bed. Simple. A crate isn't somewhere to put a dog when you can't be bothered with it. How long does he spend in there if he's there during the day too? I'd cry if I was him.

More exercise in the evenings might help. My dog sleeps in my room on the floor, and rarly wakes up needing to go outside, until i do. She's in by 11PM, and out by 9 AM

He probably needs to go outside. Especially with a 10 month old, his bladder is smaller than a full grown dog and it sounds like he is having a hard time holding it in.

If he's normally pretty good at holding it maybe he's hearing a neighbor leaving for work and it's time for wake and wake up means going pee,put him in anougher room and see if this helps

Withhold water and food 2 hours before bedtime, and have him pee before going in the crate. This will help.
