i would yeah. sit down with him and say you have to talk to him and that its importants. make sure its just you and him and no distractions. Say that recently you have been having feelings for him and needed to get it off your chest. if he says he doesnt feel the same you will still be friends if he is a good mate.

45 years!? or 4 to 5 years. It depends entirely on the situation if its at work better to not say anything. Will it make things awkward if hes a friend of your friends? or are you just scared to make the leap? Just casually flirt with him and see if he is responsive. Does he come up and talk to you a lot? Are you tight? You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by asking him out. The worst he could say is no. If he really is so nice and funny nothing bad will come out of it. Just go for it you can do it

It all depends. If you think he likes you too, there shouldn't be a problem. If you have doubts as to whether he does or not, it all comes down to how ready you are to deal with possible rejection vs. how willing you are to do nothing and always wonder if something could have come of it.
Rejection vs. Lost Opportunity...
I'd go for it, if I were you. It's better than wondering.
