It seems they were written by just mere mortals with opinions so why should we take them more seriously than any other literature or works of fiction.

Too many contradictions, Mrs Badgrumble. Some actual history in there and a lot of genealogy and more than one God mentioned in the Old Testement as well. That's inconsistent. Wasn't Isaiah the one with the chariot of fire who shot up into the sky. Was that a prophecy of space travel or aeronautics back in the day? The Egyptians & Mayans had far advanced cosmolgical knowledge than depicted in the Bible which dated over 2000 years before Jesus.

Good point, Lexo80. I'd forgotten about the mixed fibres in raiments. There goes my polycotton sweater.
Does it not just seem like a collection of superstitious sayings to appease a man-made God and then the New Testement to satisfy the needs of the church?

We don't know that they were divine. They were indeed written by those people. We shouldn't take them any more seriously than any other literature. However, that's not to say that we shouldn't take literature or fiction seriously.
Incidentally, nowhere in the Bible does it say that the earth is flat. But it does say that we shouldn't wear clothes made of two different kinds of fabric.

If you mean divinely inspired. With the Bible you have to measure the books against them selves. Look at Prophecy and how accurate it has been. Look at the original texts that we have so far and make comparisons. The thing is knobby, that you have to do the foot work your self. We do have to look at why it's so special. There are certain things you can take and wonder how people knew in the days when the books were written. Such as in Isaiah when it says about the earth being an orb spinning on nothing. This was 700 years B.C.
I actually think in the original texts is where we find the inspired words of God depicting historically accurate information.

The idea behind the Holy Books was right, until man kind took over and twisted God's words to control, and profit from others, just look around for proof, however the truth is within the books, you just have to sort out mans way to Gods way.

God inspired the Bible through forty writers.
Inspiration doesn't mean the biblical writer just felt enthusiastic, like the composer of "The Star-Spangled Banner." Nor does it mean the writings are necessarily inspiring to read, like an uplifting poem. The biblical Greek worked for inspiration literally means "God-breathed." Because God breathes out Scripture - because it originates from Him - it is true and inerrant.
Biblical inspiration may be defined as God's superintending of the human authors so that, using their own individual personalities - and even their writing styles - they composed and recorded without error His revelation to humankind in the words of the original autographs. In other words, the original documents of the their own personalities and literary talents, wrote under the control and guidance of the Holy Spirit, the result being a perfect and errorless recording of the exact message God desired to give to man.
Hence, the writers of Scripture were not mere writing machines. God did not use them like keys on a typewriter to mechanically reproduce His message. Nor did He dictate the words, page by page. The biblical evidence makes it clear that each writer had a style of his own. (Isaiah had a powerful literary style; Jeremiah had a mournful tone; Luke's style had medical overtones; and John was very simple in his approach.) The Holy Spirit infallibly worked through each of these writers, through their individual styles, to in errantly communicate His message to humankind.

Thats what I like about the Tao Te Ching - no one really claims that the 'author' actually wrote it, everyone accepts that they are just a lot of writings/teachings from various times in history that have been put together.

If I told you an incredible story, you would or would not believe it.A group of people called Apostles saw Jesus before He died and after He arose from the dead, like He said He would .Whether you want to believe it or not is entirely up to you ,there is no compulsion. There are many such stories in Bible this was one of them.
PS why would these people die for their beliefs?

They are not divine, if such a thing were true, the Bible would have no errors, historical mistakes, insertions, deletions or contradictions.

We shouldn't. While I feel there is some actual history mixed in, most of it is writings from those who wished to control people's behavior.
