I'm in New York City for a week in March and want to do a day trip to Washington. What's the best and cheapest way to travel? I've looked on amtrack.com and fares look expensive (over $300 for a quicker train).

If the train is that expensive you might be able to find airfare even at a cheaper price... but I understand.... NYC airports are a pain the ***... You may not want to. However, I used to work for an airline and March is a great and cheap time to travel. I much rather prefer LaGuardia Airport because it's less crowded then JFK.

If not, driving may not be all that bad. Gas may be expensive in NYC but it gets cheaper the farther south you go and it certainly wont be nearly $300 in gas to get there.

Another suggestion? Try http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/rid/ or http://newyork.craigslist.org/rid (this is an online community) -- This is the "rideshare" area where maybe you can carpool with someone else that is going to Washington or coming back from Washington around the same time from NYC.

Good luck!!!

Do not take the train. It's a ripoff. A one way ticket on Amtrak from NY to DC is $72. However, on Megabus it's $8-$25. Amtrak only saves an hour compared to the bus. Reserve your Megabus trip a month in advance. Purchase the ticket online. Print out the ticket. On the day of the trip show it to the driver.

You can use rail but why use AMTRAK. Using commuter rail can take longer and it might be less covient and slower but it's really cheap. All youi need to do is get to NEWARK PENN STATION you can usually get there from the PATH (Subway to New Jersey). Then you take the NJ Transit Northeast Corridor line to Philadelphia. From that you would have to take AMTRAK from Philadelphia to Baltimore. From Baltimore you can take the MARC to Washington Union Station.

try jetblue.com they fly from kennedy to dc/dulles, it's a little out of the way (i think, maybe like an hour or so from the city center but jetblue has pretty cheap fares, like $50/person or so)
