there are positives and negatives for both, but it depends on why you're doing it. if you just don't have the initiative to finish high school or apply for competitive colleges and universities, then that won't reflect well upon you to future employers.

however, if you don't feel challenged by school, that's a good reason to opt to take the ged, so you can move onto college.

there's certainly nothing wrong with going to a city college, especially if you can't afford an expensive private institution. or if you're unsure of what you'd like to do with your life, it's a good way not to waste money at a pricey school while you figure it out. i've gone to both public and private schools, and found the level of education to be good at both.

one caveat though--many people in my family (my mother and father, uncles) got their geds instead of graduating from high school, and they unanimously wish they'd toughed it out.

but whatever you decide, good luck in planning your future! :)

If you still have a chance to get your high school diploma then go for it, if you're already in your 20's or so then the GED is nothing to be ashamed of what so ever. It will help you the same as a diploma as long as you go to college and further your education you have nothing to worry about. You have your mind in the right place whichever way you look at it because you want to go to college. Whether you have a GED, or a High School Diploma you can still get financial aid or a student loan.......you're doing the right thing just never give up and good luck.

Not at all. I flunked nearly every single subject I took in high school. Needless to say, I did not graduate. I went to community college and got a 2-year degree and then transfered to the University of Washington. I'm now 21, in my junior year and pursuing an English degree. (By the way, I don't have a GED, either. Most colleges do not require you to finish high school, what matters to them most is that you complete the required academic subjects).
If you want to go to college, go for it! GED or high school diploma, it really doesn't matter. If you're high school age, than I think you should really consider whether getting a GED is the way to go. If you're way behind in terms of credits, than getting a GED might be your best option. It really depends on your situation.

It's not a bad thing as long as you get it. Don't let anyone tell you any different. Just make sure you continue your education. This way you can get into college quicker. The only thing about a ged and high school is you will have to spend a year at community college before you could go to university. Where as H.S. you can go straight in to university.

Don't listen to BenB!!!! He obviously does not understand different people very well. You got your GED and that's good-it shows that you cared enough about it. Now you want to go to a city college. That is great too!!!! It's a college!!! It doesn't have to be an Ivy League school. As long as you futher your education it shows that somethings matter to you and THAT is what counts. Do what is best for YOU and forget these nut jobs on YA who will tell you that you're a quitter- It's obvious that YOU ARE NOT. Go for it And TONS OF LUCK AND LOVE TO YOU!!!!!!

I sure hope not...cause that's what I am doing.

A GED is nothing to be ashamed of. Getting your high school diploma will give you the sense of sticking it out, even though you didn't want to...but getting your GED isn't bad. It helped propel me out into the world and on my own.

City/Community/Junior College is a great place to start. It is much cheaper than any University out there. They offer the same General Ed courses as the Universities, so you will not be losing anything there.

If you get your GED and then go on and get a degree you are fine. If you just get a GED, I think it does not reflect on you as well as a high school diploma.

Stick out high school if you can, but if it is already too later, at minimum graduate from a 2 year college.

I'm going to break it to you. YES. It tells me you're a quiter of something so incredible easy to pass these days that all you have to do is show up. Finish high school, go to community, finish at a university.

I've seen the GED requirements and they are a joke. I'm not impressed by anyone that has one. Finish high school.

undesirable concept! not lots you're able to do if your dad desires to be a entire d-bag and kick you out at 18 (with a bit of luck there's a relative or pal you could stay with to end college), yet, you will decide to get your degree. you won't be able to connect the army with purely a GED. you may choose 15 credit hours of faculty coursework (at a hundred-point or bigger) to be seen...yet even then, i does not decide to guess my destiny on it, because of the fact the army is going to furnish 1st precedence to those who stick it out and get the degree - and with the army wanting to trim 70-80,000 over the subsequent 3 years, my money may be on them filling each and all of the slots long earlier they get to any severe college dropouts. terrific selection (properly, purely selection): stay at college!!!
