Depends on what state you are from. In many states, they mail you a renewal form, usually 4 to 8 weeks prior to the expiration date. But many states also say it is the owners responsibility to renew their registration. Which basically it is. So keep an eye on when your registration expires and renew it before it expires.
Different states allow you to renew it early..NJ is up to 3 months ahead of expiration date. So check out your states website and find it out.

You should receive a renewal reminder if...it doesn't get lost in the mail ( OR ) if your address is not the same address that is on your drivers license .... you will not get the renewal notice.

Most Post Offices will not forward official mail due to the personal information act.

Check your plate to see when it expires and go to DMV or renew online.

Once your vehicle is registered, it is registered forever until you sell it. You should get a notice every year about one month from the time the license plate needs renewing.
