I was due to buy a Boxer pup in a couple of weeks time.
But a friend has offered me a Boxer that is twelve months old and in need of a new home.
I know very little about dogs.
Is this dog too old to take on,
will it make strange with a new owner.
How would it react with my kids.
Any help please.

if he hasn't had any training, it could be challenging to start with a 12 month old dog, but also a lot of fun. boxers are wonderful with children, but they are also big and energetic. if your kids are very small you just want to make sure that he doesn't knock them down trying to play. if this dog already has basic house training etc, you will probably have a much easier time than you would with a puppy! puppies are fun, but they are a LOT of work. at 12 months, you get to skip all the really hard stuff. boxers have great personalities and make great family dogs. he will adjust to you and your home quickly. if you can give a home to a dog who needs one, i say you should do it! if you can afford to, enroll him in an obedience class and bring the kids along. that way you will all learn how to train your new dog (especially since you said you don't know much about dogs). good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Just make sure you know the genuine reason why this 12 month old is being rehomed, particularly if you have young children. A Boxer is a bit of a handful if you are not an experienced owner & an Untrained 12 month old with issues could turn out to be too much. If there is a genuine reason he could be ideal if he's already had some training and is good with children.

Boxers are excellent with kids, although there are exceptions to every dog breed. Twelve months is a good age - they are slowing down alittle and yet they're mature enough to catch on pretty quick. Just think of all the adult dogs that are adopted out to new owners that do fine.

If you are an inexperienced owner, an older dog would be a better choice for you anyway.

I once adopted a 5-year old boxer who's owner's moved to a retirement home. Yes, he had some issues, but he was still a great dog and very loving. I never regretted it.
Dog's can accept new owner's (leaders), especially at 12 months old. They may come with baggage, but they forget it quickly when provided with good leadership.
Boxer's are known to be very good with kids. How good will depend on your leadership.
Just think, you probably get to skip potty training and maybe some other behavioral training.
Be a good leader to the dog, and you'll be fine. Check out Ceasar Milan, The Dog Whisperer, on National Geographic Channel.
Good luck!

DEFINITELY not too old to take in. It will adjust well if you give him a little bit of time, and there's the added bonus that he's probably already housebroken...

I would have your kids meet the dog at your friend's house to see how they will react. Be sure to teach your kids the right way to behave around animals (no yelling, hitting, pulling ears and tails, etc.), and you should be okay.

Boxers are normally real good with kids and very protective of their family. They are also smart and eager to please. Get on the net and do some research on training. If you get the TV Show "The Dog Whisperer", watch that, go to the web site below and learn. Caesar is awesome. Good Luck!!

It is always safer to get a dog when they are younger so that way they get used to the kids and grow with them, but 12 months isnt bad, it just might be safer cause the puppy is younger

i like older dogs because they are usually already trained, and all you have to do is take your kids to the dog and see how it responses to them, if it has been brought up with or around other kids.i found older dogs when re homed are generally more loving and loyal to their new owners.
