It varies from person to person, but is usually within a range of 2 to 8 weeks. It doesn't really stop you feeling depressed, it just raises your base level a little to make life a bit easier. It is a good idea to also try a talking therapy such as counselling, as well as making healthy lifestyle choices - eat well, stick to a regular 8 hour sleep pattern, walk for an hour a day and spend time with family and friends. Good luck.

My wife has been put on paroxatine for severe depression and anxiety and unfortunatley has found it helps her very little but medication such as anti-depressants usually take about 4-6wks before they start taking effect, but based on my wifes long history of depression, tablets arent a magical cure so maybe you could see your doctor about some kind of counselling aswell if you feel that may help you, either way I wish you luck and hope that you have success with the medication.

It takes a good 6 to 8 weeks for any anti-depressent to get into your system before feeling any benefits. If after this time you still feel depressed I would go back and see your GP who may change you to a different kind. I have been on various anti-depressents for many years and it took awhile before I found the right one for me. Don,t give up hope you will get there in the end, I also have councilling which I find helps too.
Take care A

It will take about four weeks for you to see some relief in symptoms, such as sleep, appetite.
You should feel much better in 8 weeks.
Hang in there, these are maximum times and you will notice that you start to have more good days.
Changing your medication will not help has most drugs of this type take the same amount of time to be effective.

It took Paroxitine about 7 or 8 days to finally kick in for me. My Psychiatrist said that it could take up to 30 days to take affect, as the half life is very short.

most antidepressants take at least 4-6 weeks to work, sometimes longer, and if they are working , you should continue to take them 6 months after you feel that you are "well" on them.
