or do i have to file as a married couple but file seperatly?

Generally, you can not file as Head of Household if you are married.

The one exception is if you did not live with your spouse the last 6 months of the year and you are supporting a dependent.

Wayne Z is correct on this one. If you lived with your spouse at any time during the second half of the year, even if it was only one night, then you can't file as head of household and would have to either file jointly or as married filing separately.

Ther aer two options for amrried couples when filing tax returns. Either a joint return, or married filing separate. Financially a joint return is a better way to go as you have a hugher standard deduciton that on the married filing separate....However IF filing joint is not possible then married filing separate is the only other option.

if i were you, you should look at both options, married filing jointly, or married filing seperately. You cannot file as HOH.
