Genesis 11:1-9

And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar.
And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

of course not. not only is the bible probably one of the most unreliable sources ever, but i happen to study the relationships of languages. languages (much like organisms) when arranged by similarity, end up falling into a nested hierarchy, and can be organized onto a tree with branches. this (as with biology) points to one thing, gradual and continuous evolution.

in addition to this, we have proof that languages do in fact evolve. the tower of babel was supposedly 4,000 years ago, and since that time new languages have still continued to sprout from old ones.

what i mean to say is,,, even if you believe in the tower of babel, you can't use it to explain why we have languages like french and spanish. it is well attested that french and spanish have been EVOLVING from latin over the last 2,000 years, and therefore would have formed completely independently from the tower of babel even if there even were such a thing.

when we look at all of the indo european languages, we can see that their common ancestor must have been spoken about 5,000 or 6,000 years ago. we notice about the same time frame for the finno-ugric languages. in order to connect the finno-ugric languages to the samoyedic languages (in the uralic family) though, we must go back even further. and we must go back still yet further to connect those languages with their supposed relative yukaghir. and there are other language families that show even more diversity than this one.

so,,,, i'll tell you what i tell the creationists. IF god is in fact responsible for the distribution of languages, then it's clearly his goal to try to trick us by making it so strongly resemble an evolved process.

you mean the tower at babylon? sure there is proof, you can still see the foundation. if you mean like the bible story no way. yes the hebrew workers built it, but as for the rest, it is an allegorical story at best, and an outright fabrication in all probability.
