Usually the handler (blind person) knows the route to follow and gives the dog instructions on how to get there. The dog doesn't instinctively know how to get to the library, bank, or post office.

I suppose after enough repetition, the dog might learn how to get to various regularly frequented places, but the dog is still trained to follow the handler's instructions and not usually to go do things on his own.

They are trained quite well. I would think that it is the blind human that knows where he is going, he just needs the dog to make sure he doesn't get killed. Perhaps some dogs do actually know where they are going from start to finish, but I think the majority of the time the blind know which direction. After all, they're not dumb, just blind.

Why don't blind people bunji jump?
-Because it scares the hell out of the seeing eye dog.

They don't know exactly where to go, if they are in an strange eviroment, their handlers tell them right, left, forwards, and halt., however a seeing-eye (or any dog) can be conditioned to go to a certain place on command, if they've been there several times (they usually find it by scent)

dogs and animals in general run on instinct but dogs especially are smart and learn.
Thier brains are the same size as humans but don't have grooves in them so that they don't hold as much knowledge.
They only can't talk

They are intensively trained and follow orders given verbally by the handler. They are also usually very intelligent breeds.

They are specially trained from puppies. They seem to know what is going to happen before it even starts. It is very hard.
