i have pre turn of the last century mastiffs on a over stuffed chair that was a universities lounge piece i had to break the arm and rip them out and place one on either end of my beads for playing straight pool up in the dungeon great pieces!=if you have them they come from the Victorian age as the east lake and other furniture makers were giving great personal detail to what buyers wanted in the 1850-1900 era i love gargoyles and all things carved in to black oak from the black forests of 1800 European wood workers, also many Belgium carved eighth or more pieces of animals were joined to make smoking pipes, i sold this stuff back out the door of a 1960's antique shop as fast as it came in, all stuff like with bull dogs were gone in a heart beat and in was always wondering if the supply of antique would disappear and i should have photograph all the stuff

Perhaps you mean "dogs" which are fittings on a wood working bench which provide stops or a way to hold the workpiece?
