This is serious, and I say this as I am one of "those" people who cut themselves "for no reason".
I tell you now, there is always a reason. This friend of yours needs to know that someone is there for him/her, without prejudice. It's hard to understand, but the best thing you can do is listen and not judge.. It's hard enough for people to admit they self-harm without people they know making judgements against them.
The most important thing you can do right now is to be there for your friend, maybe let them know you know what's happening, tell them you understand why they do it and let them talk.
A good rescource is www.recoveryourlife.com.
Good luck, and email me if you need help.

yes of course and you said in your question that they do it for no reason, there is a reason they are in serious emotional anguish and turmoil. they need a coping method, ask them to seek professional help, support but don't become too involved because it can have damaging effects on your own emtions if you can't keep a distance( trust me i know) and something i wish i'd known a long time ago - set some boundaries - tell the person that you care about them and want to help but make it extremely clear that you will in no way condone the cutting or accept responsibilty for any of it. i know that sounds really obvious but believe me when you get involved and wanting to do anything to help, those boundaries quickly become blurred and from someone that is now burnt out and destroyed because i didn't have any, please take my advice and set boundaries early and keep them, it will make things so much easier in supporting them. Also things get hard for you don't be afraid to seek help, sure you are not the one cutting and therefore don't have a problem, i thought that too, but caring for someone that does this is emotionally draining and research has actually shown that a large portion of carers without professional support end up in a worse emotional state then the person they were caring for. if you choose to support this person through this, you have a long road ahead of you but it is worthwhile and your friend needs your help.

Serious.. yes. I will not tell you what to do; you must decide. Found a website on it: http://www.coolnurse.com/self-injury.htm
I've known atleast one person who would harm herself; she had been abused very badly. I hope your friend finds ways to deal with their pain that makes their life better, rather than worse.
take care

Yes, of course it should be taken seriously. Tell your friend that you're aware of their self-harming and try and get them to see their doctor. Be there to support them and tell them it WILL be okay.
