Today in school, in my religion class we were having a discussion about emotions and depression and all that stuff, and one girl said she thinks that only girls have a right to be depressed because they have a harder life than men, and that men who get depressed or cry, are weak and lazy.

What do you think about that? I am 15, and I am a guy and I take medication for depression so does that make me a loser or whatever? The teacher disagreed with her and so did other kids in the class, but I want to know what other people think about it?

HUMANS get depressed. Actually, I've even seen depressed cats and dogs.

The girl is self-centered, that's all. People who acknowledge being depressed and get treatment are NOT losers. Those who put others down for have issues. Heck - she probably has back issues and archives on microfiche, hon.

Not at all. Everybody has a right to let life cave in on them sometimes. Its just important to find ways to get out of it because depression is a nasty self feeding animal and the less you fight it, the more it takes from you.

A couple years ago I got depressed and I didn't recognize it for what it was. I couldn't see good in my life and I didn't want to. I even had stupid thoughts about ending it all and I had no real reasons for it because I had a job, a loving family, a loving girlfriend. In the end I snapped out of it when I managed to reduce the stress level in my job, but unless you have good support, I guess its hard.

What I don't understand from over here in Europe is how many antidepressants are given out in America. How come doctors prescribe pills instead of prescribing lifestyle changes? Why pump someone full of medication instead of getting to the bottom of WHY they are depressed? Does no one have time over there?

Starve the depression beast by locating the good things in life and focusing on them, making them the cornerstones in a new vision of your life. You're alive, your young, you're healthy. If you've got too much empty time on your hands, take up a hobby or go out into your community and help someone else. Even if it is sitting down and listening to an older person tell you about their life. Learn all you can!

Its your life. Grab it by the balls and take it were YOU want! You are not a loser if you are fighting depression, but you sure are one heck of a winner when you get on top of it!

There millions of men and women who have depression and take medication for it, if she has a problem with it then she has a problem with people and life, if men who are weak, lazy or a looser who suffer with depression, tell her to look in a mirror and stop judging others,

No, I do not. I knew two young men who had a beautiful wives and kids and a good jobs. One was a tough steel worker and the other a home builder. They were both some of the hardest working guys I've ever seen. One was even a Christian. They both killed themselves. Were they losers? No, they both had illnesses and should have been on medication. Good for you for taking yours. I take mine.

No, not at all the majority of men are told not to express themselves as a gay male friend did what he felt was the only thing to do was to end his life by jumping off a bridge rather then facing whatever his demons were haunting with.

Depression has nothing to do with gender. However woman can cause depression in men faster then any thing else I have encountered but in truth it is usually a chemical imbalance triggered by not being able to cope with something in your life.

the girl made a really ignorant statement. she needs to find out exactly what depression is and what causes it before she speaks out about it. thats like saying someone who has diabetes or a thyroid condition is weak and should just get over it. a person with depression is usually has a mild to severe chemical imbalance and they can no more balance that out than a diabetic can control their glucose levels without help and medication. silly girl and biased if you ask me, her words can really hurt someone...i think the bible has something to say about that too.

Absolutely not, in fact I think it is harder for a guy to admit, and seek help for depression. Anyone can suffer from depression, I think you are brave to get help for it, that girl is just insensitive, you are not a losser, but those who judge others are, good for you in addressing your depression.
