She'll leave them as often as she is comfortable doing so. They should eat every 2 hours, and if they're not fed, they will cry and mom will come running.

If mom is taking long breaks away from the pups, I'd recommend putting a hot water bottle or heating pad in with the pups. Make sure that you wrap it in a towel and leave an area that is not heated so the pups can squirm their way over to it if they get too hot! One of the leading causes of death in new pups is catching a "chill" so make sur eyou keep them warm!

Also, make sure mom is getting out to potty often and that you are feeding her 2-3 times what she was eating before giving birth!

My dog had puppies two years ago, she would feed them every couple of hours. At about 3 weeks, they can start eating puppy food. She will gradually ween them by 8 weeks. You shouldn't have a problem unless when they whine, she ignores them. You want to make sure she doesn't get an infection in her nipples or glands. Keep them clean. If they get red and hot, try holding a warm compress on them a couple time a day. If that doesn't help, then take her to a vet. That could be very painful for her.

Mum knows best. As long as she's feeding & cleaning them regularly & the pups are not distressed, they'll be fine. Some of the best Mums seem very casual about their pups but always know when they are really needed.

We have a Parti Pomeranian who had puppies the 19th of December. She leaves her puppies quite often but she always go to them when she hears them crying and she checks on them periodically. After many litters, From many different dogs this is perfectly normal. She will do fine.

A half hour is just fine. Pups can be very vocal. If they cry alot and she doesnt return for very long periods then just encourage her. However, many dams leave their pups longer than that.

the mother will start to feel trapped in about a weeks time, at three to four weeks old the mother will leave them but go back when the pups get to about 5 weeks, you should start them on puppy food mixed with puppy milk called LACTOL to learn them how to lap, at six to seven weeks they should be eating solids but cannot leave the mother until eight weeks.
when my cross had her first litter, in the first week she only left them when she wanted to go the toilet, and when she went into the vets, because one of the pups was stuck when she was in labour, she had to have a c section and got spayed at the same time, even though she was in terrible pain she looked after her babies, then it was up to me to feed them and clean up after them
