First of all if you can't talk to her because you're not confidante just ask for her number. I find it easier talking with girls on the phone.
If it's because her friends always show up tell her "look I wanna talk with you for a sec. can we go a side for a min." and just talk to her see what's going on and hope for the best. You can't loose if it doesn't go well it's a good practice.

i have the same problem w/ guys.....get to know her friend maybe or make a notion to her to get the message and buzz off

Maybe you can ask her to hang out sometimes? So then, you can have some one-on-one time with her. && then, you'll be able to tell her.

gradually smile at her when you see her. then start saying hey to her, but slowly so she doesn't get freaked out. Just take it slow, it'll come.
