Does any one have a good, healthy way of dealing with extreme emotions? I have self-harmed in the past, and have made up my mind to stop. I need another outlet - preferably free and easy.

Thanks x

hmmm...when i was cutting , i had three diaries. and i still have one. like, it felt like expressing my feelings some way helped a little.
one thing i did was i talked to someone. not exactly about self harm, but about stuff in general. it helped to have someone who i knew cared about me. do you have any friends that you could talk to? i mean, i was afraid that i was burdening them, but really thats what friends are for. to be there when things get rough for you. (i certainly would want a friend to tell me)
the other thing i did was i went out and i helped other people. i talked and listened to my friends problems, and i worked with a youth group for kids that were going through stuff. it helped to distract me, and do you know how good it feels to help someone else? its amazing.
oh yeah and there is nothing wrong with therapy or counseling. i have been to many many therapists and while some are better than others, i dont remember a single one who didnt care about me, and want good to come of the counseling.

I understand compleatly how one can experince extreame emontions, but what you need to do is take each day as it comes and write down the situations that seem to take control.Secondly look to alternative medicnes to help..i use "BACH FLOWER REMEDY"..4 DROPS 4 TIMES ADAY ,you will start to feel more relaxed. Also look at the sort of things you eat.which can have a massive effect on your energy levels and moods.

For an outlet i suggest you get hold of a walking group,i live on Dartmoor here, where do you live?
exersise is well known to help the stressed mind.i cannot suggest much more than this because i do not know you in person..but these should help you along for now..

take care..and have a massage!

I have really bad nerves myself and in the past it was so bad, I didn't leave my house unless absolutely necessary for three years. My best advice is, take a deep breath, hold it and count to ten then, let it out slowly. Think of your favorite place and close you eyes, imagine that you are there. Another outlet for bad nerves are crafts. You could get into painting, ceramics or even cross stitch. Those are some of the things that help me out. I hope this helps you.

Try exercising it will help you get a lot of built up emotions out and it will also make you feel better. Also try listening to music, reading a book or even just taking a few deep breaths. Those things help me. When I was younger I also didn't know how to channel my emotions and I use to throw and break things. Then once I calmed down I always felt like a big idiot. Please don't hurt yourself though it will only make you feel worse. It may make you feel better in the moment but in the long run it will make you feel much much worse.

I can suggest beating up a pillow, painting, playing a musical instrument but you need to see what makes you feel better. For example, for me knitting is really helful but it might be absurd to some people. Also, an excellent way is to write down everything, treat the paper as psychiatrist, write everything that's bothering you, u r thinking about etc..I like to burn it after (be careful you do it in a safe way) which makes me feel better as I feel all those nagatives are reduced to ashes. & it does work!

If there was a free and easy way we'd all be doing it... beliefe in ones self is the strogest thing you can have, it will make you over-come anything.. its just no always easy to believe in yourself, someone good to talk to is always helpful too.. like a bf or a good freind

LOL! 1 being calm all the time and 10 being upheavel LOL as you state I would say I am a 3. Every action has a reaction... so its how you react. Surely no one wants to take a problem and become the problem.

It would seem like you are already half way there because you've admitted to yourself what you are doing and have decided that you want to stop, so very well done to you indeed.Have you ever thought of seeking counselling of some sort? I wish you every success in your search for inner happiness.

This sounds very serious! U really need to get to a professional to get the help u need. If u don't have money, ur state has a health dept & they can refer u. A good medication can be very effective.
