It's a very important work. Leonardo da Vinci did not complete many paintings to this level of finish and it is also a superb example of the sfumato technique he invented. It also illustrates da Vinci's moti mentali, or motions of the mind. A moments thought caught in a facial gesture. The landscape depicted in the painting is a place where Leonardo would have probably surveyed on during his work with Cesare Borgia and thus gives credence to Leonardo's movements during his life time. This is part of its importance as a piece of art history.

As for its fame, well that has a lot to do with the mystery that surrounds the painting. What you have to appreciate is that you as a viewer has the right to like or dislike a painting but its importance is of no relevance to the general public . Its value lies with what information it can provide for the art historian. I agree that there have been far more beautiful paintings created during the Renaissance and beyond and that many painters other than Leonardo contributed to art but (and I'm putting my art historians hat on now) you can not compare a painting which is simply nice to look at to a painting which imparts so much valuable information and demands constant research

In my personal opinion, Da Vinci wasn't a master painter, at least, not as far as other contempories of his..it wasn't his 'forte'.
Yes, he was a brilliant architect, anatomist, sculptor, engineer, inventor, mathematician, musician, scientist ect and what have you, but, as far as painting goes, far better was to be had elsewhere.
The fact that the Mona Lisa or 'La Giocconda' has now become the most famous painting in the world has more to do do with the fact that it's associated with the greatest all round geniouses of all time, but not because the painting itself is extraodinary in any way.

If you want purity and brilliance in 'art' for art's sake, then go no further than Caravaggio...

Da Vinci said that it was his best work, and since many think that he is one of the greatest artists ever, they tend to believe that this is one of the best paintings ever.

DiVinci painted it. Supposed to be him in drag, mother, or a nun, nobody knows, just like his supposed code. Experts just figured it was a nun who died in 1542 how is this possible when we dont know who is in the painting?

It's that quiet all-knowing, all-seeing, little perk smile that looks so secretive, so seductive so enchanting so alluring. She sometimes can look like a "he" if you squint your eyes.
