According to the dog, there's a reason. Be sure that you tell your friend : do not approach the dog. For now, have your friend avoid eye contact with the dog and just toss treats in the other direction. No teasing. No playing, no petting, nothing. Have your friend do this for a while - and do not ever, ever push your dog into an uncomfortable situation with this or any other person.
You're very lucky to have what sounds like an understanding friend (otherwise why would he have chosen to be around the dog again...) I hope he's in the mood to help you!
Good luck!

Believe it or not but dogs are a good judge of character.
One thing that you might try is to pick up your dog and hand him to this guy, butt first. This way the dog does not see any intention movements. If your dog still carries on with the biting after 4 or 5 of doing this transfer then you will probably have to put the dog in the bedroom or someplace other than with the two of you.
Your dog is sensing something bad about this man and I would pay heed. If this man is a very important to you I would do this transfer everytime that man walks in the house. But, beware of your dogs judgement of him.

Dogs are usually a good judge of character. There's a reason for it, but it isn't okay. It's a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Why would a man approach a dog when it gives growls to "back off?" (Pride issues?)
Given the very limited background and scenario info, my advice is to crate the dog when he comes over, and better yet- don't invite the guy over. If it's just this one guy out of the tons that come over, I'd say your dog knows something you don't. He obviously doesn't respect bounderies.
Putting down more than one dog for biting people is a clear sign you are doing something wrong. Things can usually be resolved with training.

Obviously your dog doesn't like something about this man. Animals can sense things about people we humans can't. I had a firend who's Terrier mix used to have a fit when the guy next door to her came over to borrow something. If given the chance the dog would have torn him apart. After she lived in the apartment about three months the guy broke into her apartment and raped her (he was wearing a mask so she couldn't identify him) They were able to find him though because that night he showed up at the hosptial bleeding profusely from a very bad wound in the lower calf of his right leg. While he was attacking my friend the dog hid but as he was leaving the dog lunged at the guys leg and actually took a chunk out of it...they found the "severed" chunk of flesh in his pants leg.

The only thing that i can think of is that there is something about this guy that mutt doesn"t like. I have a Mini Dobi that is the same way. He has to get to know a person very well before he will interact with them and there are some that he wont approach no matter how many times they try. It could be the guy reminds him of the person that hurt him.

the guy reminds the dog of the person who abused it either by sight, smell, or sound. It is likely that your dog will always be mean around this person. you will just have to keep the dog away from the guy, unless you can find a dog trainer that has some tips on how to help.

This guy obvioulsy reminds your dog of someone in it past who abused the dog. Or the dog knows something about this guy that you haven't figured out. Dogs are way lot smarter than we think.
