There's different symbols - circles, squares, triangles and diamonds, they can be either outlines or shaded black. The indicate diversion routes for main roads and motorways.

They are used for motorway diversions.

They are routes you can follow to go the pretty way. You have to use something like the AA routefinder to use them I think
