i don't know about penguins but ducks have no feeling in their feet that's how they swim in ice cold water with no problem. maybe penguins don't either

Out of the 18 species of penguin, only 2 of them live on ice, so the vast majority of penguins don't have this problem.

They actually wear neoprene flip flops, but the wildlife programmes never show them(ruins the image really). A young eskimo entrepreneur came up with the idea 34 years ago and sells them for 5 fish a pair. The funniest sight is seeing 4268 pairs of them lined up on the edge of an icecap at mealtimes.

They have a system of arteries that moves the blood around so that warm blood is pumped into the feet and the cold is pumped back into the body, but still the feet are only a couple of degrees above freezing.

Their feet have a sort of natural anti-freeze in the cells and also are mostly made of thick leathery skin and bones - there is not much flesh to freeze.
