I think you need to go back through and see all that they did to Him before they put Him on the cross, and then what entailed afterwards.

The Roman soldiers knew what they were doing. They killed many a people and knew how to tell if they were dead. They also risked losing their life, if the person wasn't.

Jesus lost so much blood that His heart started producing fluid, which is what came out when they pierced His side.

If Jesus was unconscience, where did the body go? Did He roll the stone away Himself? Why didn't the guards subdue Him? It would have been pretty easy with all the wounds He had. Not to mention He wouldn't have been able to walk anywhere in the condition He was in when He died, if He were just a man. If the disciples saved Him, how did they get past the guards? The were expert soldiers and could have killed them all without breaking a sweat.

If Jesus was really just unconscience and appeared before the disciples in the state He was in on the cross, they never would have followed Him to death, because they would have known it was a lie.

Jesus definitely died. He experienced hematidrosis (sweating blood) which caused his skin to be extremely fragile when he was flogged the next day. When he was flogged he went into hypovolemic shock becasue he lost a large amount of blood. His blood pressure dropped, and he became very thirsty because his boyd craved fluids to replace the lost blood volume. When he was put on the cross both of his shoulders were dislocated. But he ultimately died of asphyxiation. He went into respiratory acidosis, He had an irregular heartbeat, and then He died of cardiac arrest.

But even before he died the hypovolemic shock caused a rapid heart rate which contributed to his heart failure resulting in the collection of fluid in the membrane around the heart and the lungs. (It's called pericardial and pleural effusion, do some research about it.) From the description in the Bible the sword was probably thrust between his ribs on his right side. The spear apparently went through the right lung and into the heart which made the blood and clear fluid, like water, come out. Guess what the clear fluid is? Pericardial and pleural effusion!

"But when they (the soldiers) came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead one of the soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may have faith." (John 19:33-35)

The resurrected Christ, speaking to John in Revelation chapter 1, verse 17,18 says "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades." (NIV)

Personally, I believe He died, or He couldn't have used His power to do what He had to do. Open the doorways back up in the spirit world.
There is one thing that Messes with me though. They say Jesus was switched with another man, and that man actually died, and the Killers knew it! And they claim it's in the Bible!
And it does talk about guarding the tomb so Jesus's followers can't steal the body and say He Rose. "Or the second mistake will be worse than the first!" What was the first mistake?

A Roman soldier pierced His side with a spear to make sure He was dead. When he pierced Him, blood and water issued from His body. The water would be a buildup of liquid due to His hanging on the cross. Possibly from a punctured lung.

That depends on your perspective on whether you feel Christ actually died on the cross. I for one, do not.

Having read "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" by Micheal Baigent, it talks about the crucifixion of Nazarenes as being a rite of passage rather than a means of death. It is entirely possible, in their hypothesis, that this was a customary procedure, not meant to kill a person.

It is also suggested that the wounds that Christ received would not have been life threatening. The stab wound where it was reported to have taken place would have not been fatal. Additionally, crucifixitions generally took place without the feet being nailed to the cross because of the fact that if the feet were nailed to the cross, the weight of the person on the cross would be supported by the feet, eliminating the suffocation that takes place by only being nailed to the cross by your hands.

This would also explain the fact that Christ "rose" in 3 days. 3 days would not have been a long enough time for Christ to have died from being crucified if he was indeed supported by the nails in this feet.

it's all conjecture since none of us were actually there.

I'd caution to believe anything verbatim that is in the bible though...

The Roman soldiers could tell who's dead and who's not, probably better than any doctor of the era.
And, considering that the Jewish leaders were hounding them about just this point, I imagine they didn't take any chances. Remember the spear in his side? That was to make SURE he was dead, even after they saw that he was dead.

It's possible that he lost consciousness while on the cross, but it is very likely that he actually died. I don't think there were any "physicians" back then. I'm sure the people that saw/held him after his body was taken down were the ones that confirmed his death.

They were going to break His legs to hurry up the process but He was already dead. They pierced His side just to make sure.
