I am getting ready for this myself. I just feel like I will die without my dog. He has helped me more than any human ever. He will be nine in March. I cant imagine life without him. I know he will stay with me until his death but, Just the idea of him not being right by my side. I feel sorry you have to go through this. Even though it is always in the back of my mind I know I wont be ready when that day comes either. You can email me if I can help!! I hope they are giving you a replacement dog? It will take a while so they tell me but, you will grow to love this dog too!!! Good Luck!!!
And everyone here with the exception of on A$$hole are trying to help. But, think about it...The only way to truly understand what your going through is to have gone through it. I cant even fully understand not yet anyway.

This guide dog was trained with a specific routine and behaviors and has performed them over and over for many years. It will take a long time to "untrain" her. You can't expect a guide dog to just suddenly drop the training that has been drilled into her for so long. You can't work on changing all these behaviors at the same time as you will just confuse her. She is also an older dog, so it will take longer to retrain her. Be very gentle and patient with her as she is already stressed out from getting a new owner, moving to a different home, and having to stop being a guide dog. Her reason for living up to now was to assist her owner - now what is her purpose? Eventually she should figure out that she can relax and enjoy her life now that she doesn't have to be on alert and work so hard any more. You should contact organizations that train guide dog as they would be well aware of the needs of a retired guide dog and should be able to give you information or direct you to sources that will help you.

Because the dog was probably your best friend for quite a long while. Are you not supposed to love your helper dog? What happens to retired service dogs? I never thought about it. Can you get another one?

Your helper dog became your best friend and now that hes not around, there is sense of emptiness. You will heal with time. You can always ask to see the dog for a visit every now and then until you heal from the pain. I wish you luck.

I am so sorry you are feeling so sad. Just like any other companion animal your helper dog was always there for you and like all of us we grow extremely attached to our furry companions. They are our friends and sometimes our confidants, they listen to us when no one else wants to. I hope that you are getting another helper dog soon as I am sure he/she will fill your heart just as much. God Bless!

I'm really sorry about your dog. Losing a companion, is almost like losing a family member. It's very heartbreaking and it hurts. You will never forget him. Have you considered getting another dog? You'd be surprised how much it helps! It just gives you the chance to give your love, and receive love, from another companion.

Hate to be so blunt but...DUH! Your helper dog was there everysecond of everyday like your extra arm an exstension of your body and now,(depending on how you did it) he isnt any where near as involved as he was. Its just a HUGE change for you, wether your getting a new dog or not, you still have and will always have that strong tie to your old one.

because you loved your dog, even if it was only a help. why not adopt a new companion, if your disability will allow it.
