What's the difference in smooth coat dachshund versus longhaird dachshund. I'm refering to temperament, which one is more laid back, i.e. lap dog, which one has more energy, is one smarter than the other. I'm looking for a laid back smart dog for our family.

Well as a life long dachshund owener, I have to tell you honestly that longhair or smooth coat, miniature or standard, Dachshunds are not laid back. They are smart, they are hyper and they are needy hounds. They demand attention. They are wonderful lap dogs while sleeping and provide extra heat on those cold winter nights.
But laid back? Nooooooooo. Get a lab if you want laid back

The only difference between a long haired or smooth coated Dachshund IS the fur---otherwise they are the same breed and are thus bred to have the same temperment, energy level, ect. If there were variations in overall temperment or energy level they would not be considered the same breed. However, they were all bred for the same purpose---to hunt badger, but were later considered too versatile to limit to that species alone so they branched out and the Dachshund was used to hunt other animals (rabbits, fox, ect.), which gave rise to the need for coat variations. Wirehaired Dachshunds' wirey coat, for example, allows them to chase prey into thorny underbrush and the like.

It is speculated that the longhaired variety is calmer and more people-oriented, but it should adhere to the overall breed temperment (that being a fiesty, often hard-headed, but eager-to-please dog).

Hope that helps.

Dachshunds are smart, yes, but absolutely NOT laid back. My in-laws have a dachshund and it is still hyper and agressive at 14! It barks all the time and has been known to bite. There are plenty of more laid back breeds that are smart as well.

I have a miniature red dappled (smooth coat). Dachshund temperament is determined by who the parents were, not the coat length. You can have more than one coat type from the same litter. My dog is VERY sweet and forgiving of my toddler son. He loves to sit in your lap, plays fetch, and knows a few tricks. They are a great breed.

I do rescue with DARE (Dachshund Adoption Rescue & Education) and know that tempermant has little to do with their coat or even their breed. Since you are interested in a doxie & are sure what kind of temperment you want, I suggest you look at www.petfinder.com. It will put you in touch with rescues & shelters in your area - PLUS a rescue dog is living with a foster family. So they can tell you a LOT about the dog, whereas shelters and breeders really don't know . . . .Good luck!!!

Look for a different breed!
Dachshunds are not well known for being a laid back lapdog!

Both are very high energy dogs and not at all laid back - they think they're much bigger than they are and if you spoil them too much, they can get snappy, too. However, the long-haired dachshunds were crossed (long, long ago) with a spaniel, so they are somewhat quieter.

I prefer hair that will is shoulder length or longer, And also since that men who like females are more often then not directly, they like long hair because that looks more feminine, as most males have short hair.
