Yeah, go to a scrapheap! I always get the non safety critical parts there. You're recycling and getting perfectly good spares for almost nothing! I picked up a couple of plastic cam belt covers the other day for £1, they were as good as new - would have cost me £20 ~ £30 from the dealer. You wouldn't believe the condition of some of the cars that are scrapped - you may strike it lucky and find a new exhaust on a knackered Escort. The only problem being it will probably be a right pain to get it off the car, but it's worth it.

Go to a breakers yard, sounds like your Mk4 should be resting up in one also.
