the only way we get the upper hand on this one is : that we have one of those great big gazebo's in the backyard with the mosquito netting on and it already eliminates many of them ! Also if you would have those net covers for plates and bowls outside ,helps too . Those you can get like at Garden Ridge .
but usually as soon you bring food out the flies are like Hyenas !
good Luck

I grew up in an Italian family, and we used to have backyard family dinners all through the summer. My uncle Tony's "no-pest" strips were (I am NOT making this up) small chunks of very stinky provolone cheese, hanging from strings, hung in various places around the yard. I should point out that it wasn't that "deli" provolone that you buy, sliced for sandwiches; it's the real, wax-coated cheese that comes in a ball shape. It's almost as hard as parmesan cheese, and twice as stinky.
Nowadays, I kind of like those coil-shaped things that you burn. I guess they contain citronella, but unlike candles, they produce some smoke. I'll use several of them at once, and try to arrange them so that the wind carries the smoke through the "dining area".

Leave a small plate of food out for them off to the side a ways from where you a cooking out. This sounds strange, but they will migrate to where no one is swatting and spraying them and not bother you or your meal. We char grill a couple of
"sacrificial hot dogs" first and slather some sauce on some old bread and ..voila'. an unterrupted meal!
P.s. an electric fly zapper wouldn't hurt either.

Take a gallon ziplock bag, and fill it with water. Then tie it up somewhere a ways from where you will be cooking. It sounds weird but it works for us. I dont know where you live but in sw alabama we have bad mosquitos too, so we put a piece of dry ice in the back of the yard and the mosquitoes will leave you alone as well.

There is a bug light that runs on batteries available at most camping stores as well as bug sprays and candles - if it is really bad hang fly paper near trash and waste areas to trap them as they fly in. Good Luck!

Spray the area first, before firing up the grill, etc.
Make sure there's a breeze, or fan. They're less likely to land when it's breezy. They also like the sun, so head for the shade.
