The doctor always says quit, but after an extraction it's rec commend you wait at least 1 day, prefer 2 days. But some of us will tell you if do smoke, take some of the gauze we gave you, moisten it with water and fold it up. Then place it over the socket and keep biting pressure on it while you smoke. And use a clean gauze every time please. This always works, and I've given that advise hundreds of times. The dry socket can be caused from many things, the sucking action, like on a straw or cigarette is another. Keeping the socket covered is the best thing. Also stay away from carbonated drinks, Coke, Pepsi, Dew. Stick to tea, milk and water for the next 2 days. Hope I was of some help. Good luck! It will get easier, we smokers never get a break anymore do we?

Make sure to moisten the gauze so it doesn't pull the clot out when you remove it.

The dentist usually sends home a little paper that has all the rules on it after having that procedure done. The most common are wait 3 days to smoke, spit, drink from a staw, or have any hot liquids. The reason for this is because it coule cause something called dry socket and it is severely painful. It causes a release of the formed blood clot. I would wait atleast 3 days. If you had to get stitches or a follow of within the next week I would wait until after that to make sure everything went ok and is healing fine then you should be all set to do pretty much whatever you want.

3 days...what i did when i absolutely HAD to have a cig was stuff the area real tight with gauze and then bite down on it a little while puffing on the cigarette. It is that sucking of air into your mouth that causes the blot clot in there to loosen. NO STRAWS either in case they didn't already tell ya. Hope you feel better soon. = )
