Suppose you go to a restaurant that is cafeteria style. The cashier undercharges you for your meal. Is it ok to not say anything?

Now, assume that you go to the same place often and the same cashier undercharges you everyday? Is it morally ok to accept the "discount" everytime?

It is not acceptable to knowingly cheat another person. If this happens, you politely say, "I think the total should actually be . . ."
Who knows, you could be wrong.

I used to manage cashiers. Underages came out of their pay. So when you don't pay your full bill, you could be taking money directly away from this person.

Please make sure you pay your fair share in the future.

It's ok not to say anything.
It's not your responsibility to calculate the total.

If the cashier intentionally undercharges you everytime, then the cashier is "stealing" from her/his employer. Still it's not your business.

If I notice, I say something, but they usually just let it slide. Cashiering is work, afterall. Since a person working as a cashier, generally lacks motivation and ambition, he/she is more likely to let it slide than do the extra work required to correct it.

PS: Coming up short on the register is caused by miscalculating change, NOT ringing things up incorrectly. Whoever answered that the cashier will have to make up the difference has misunderstood the question and suffers from poor analytical skills.

Morally and ethically it is not okay to accept it even once.

If you were the cashier, would you want your cash drawer to be "short" one day, 5 days, or 7 days.... or NONE? The cashier must put his/her own money in to make up for any shortages at the end of the day.

So, think about it.....

Plus, you'll make a friend by being honest.

No. It's never OK whether it's one time or a hundred. Even though it's his/her fault, you have a moral obligation not to accept the mistake.

No, you need to let them know that the waiter is making a mistake with your bill. This is the proper thing to do, if you don't you are taking money from that store that they rightfully made. Also if that person is doing it to you chances are they are doing it to several people.

It is never ok to cheat. Always pay what you are supposed to pay every time - whether it is small business or a big business.

Morally I would say you would have to say something, in realistic terms... happen once I probably wouldnt say anything but any more than that and I would be compelled to mention it to her.

No, if you are honest, will ask if that is a special price.

To the second part, that is obviously stealing, so no.

No, because this will short their register and she can end up losing her job.

I guess she hasn't been trained correctly, OR you're mistaken.
