I was in CAP too. If I were you I'd go to base and pick up a good pair of jungle boots without any steal toes. I say this for a few reasons: if you volunteer for activities and something heavy drops on your foot you can (instead of having your foot crushed) end up with the metal toe severing your foot. Also, in cold weather the steel toe gets VERY cold and then holds that temperature right next to your foot, making frostbite more likely. In general, my jungle boots (though made for temperate climates) with a thick pair of socks are more than sufficient for the cold weather where I'm stationed AND they're way more comfortable than standard issue or other 100% leather boots (plus, they're good in hot weather as well as acceptable in cold).

To BDU's, buy summer weight only. If it's THAT cold outside, the difference in thickness of your uniform isn't going to make a difference... you'd have to plus up to a field jacket on top of your uni, and that negates the cloth weight issues, though winter weights DO hold creases better than summer weight.

If you really want to prepare for CAP, look up the military uniform wear regs, and you can probably find the CAP regs online too. Show up with a decent uniform and be ready to learn at a quick pace and you can blast through the ranks pretty quickly. Get used to drill, get used to military discipline/customs and courtesies (which can also be looked up online), and get used to studying. CAP is really not that hard, and when you first join they're not expecting you to be an all-star.

The combat boots can be obtained with or without a steel toe. Don't buy anything unless you have to, some units are good about issuing what they can to cadets.

You can prepare by reading as much as possible at www.capnhq.gov. If you have any CAP cadet friends, see if they'll lend you any of their initial reading material.

Good luck! I think you'll enjoy it.

Do they still have a CAP? I know that they did away with Civil Defense.
